Every previous wave, Gibson reacted from the outside. This time was different, because of a decision Gibson made about a brand it already owned: Epiphone. In 2002, instead of waiting for China's factories to become a threat, Gibson built its own facility in Qingdao and sent a Gibson luthier to train it to Gibson's internal standard. That factory now builds the vast majority of everything carrying the Epiphone name. But the contract factories Epiphone left behind kept operating for other clients, and the technicians who learned Gibson's own tolerance standards didn't sign exclusivity agreements. They moved between contracts, spreading Gibson's own quality bar across an entire manufacturing region, including into guitars that now directly undercut Gibson USA's mid-tier lineup. This is the story of how Gibson trained the competition that's now eating its own market, and why there's no factory recall for institutional knowledge once it's out the door. #gibson #epiphone #guitar #guitars #guitarist #guitarhistory #guitarindustry #musicgear #gearheads #guitartok #madeinchina #guitarmanufacturing
