A ferocious, seminal cornerstone of mid-'90s German Acid Techno and Progressive Trance that cemented the production moniker Junk Project within European warehouse culture. Masterminded in 1995 by Frankfurt studio wizards Andreas Krämer and Markus Schneider (operating as Thai Rec. Production), Vol. 1 was issued as catalog UPB009 on the renowned Universal Prime Breaks imprint. While the 12" EP contained three formidable cuts—including Tongasine and Research Future—it was the A-side opener, "Brain Tool", that became a peak-time weapon, championed by hard trance and acid DJs across Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Technically, Brain Tool is a masterclass in driving 909 percussion dynamics and hypnotic 303 acid manipulation. Pressed with a high-velocity 45 RPM A-side cut, the track opens on a punishing 4x4 kick-and-claps chassis with galloping off-beat hi-hats. Over this heavy frame, Krämer and Schneider layer a sharp, modulating Roland TB-303 line that continuously opens its resonance and filter cutoffs, creating a tense, hypnotic workout designed specifically for maximum sound-system impact. For vinyl archivists, crate-diggers, and scholars of German hard-dance evolution, Vol. 1 / Brain Tool remains a highly sought-after 12" artifact—a pristine 1995 press capturing the exact point where German acid techno fused with peak-hour progressive trance energy.
