Why did the U.S. Army bring back the M14 decades after replacing it — and why did the returning rifle look so different? The original M14 was designed as a powerful, versatile service rifle. But its weight, full-power 7.62×51 NATO ammunition, length, and difficult automatic-fire role exposed the limits of trying to make one rifle do everything. Years later, the M14 returned in a very different form. The M14 EBR added an aluminum chassis, tactical optics, a bipod, an adjustable stock, and other changes that transformed the old platform into a specialized marksman system. It became heavier, but its mission had changed. This is the story of why the M14 was replaced, why it returned, and how the Army rebuilt an old rifle for a completely different job.
