Hi! Welcome to Tonari — daily life in Japan 🇯🇵
"Tonari" means "next door" in Japanese.

Today I'm taking you to work with me.
I work in real estate. I find land for people, and then we build their home on it.
It's an ordinary job here, but almost nobody outside Japan has seen it.
🏠 Why Japanese roads have to be 4 meters wide
In Japan, you cannot build a house unless the road in front of it
is at least 4 meters (13 ft) wide.
The reason is simple: fire trucks have to get through.
If the road is too narrow, the landowner gives up part of their own land
to widen it. We call this "setback." You lose a little of your property,
so that everyone on the street stays safe.
After walking these streets for years, I can guess a road's width just by walking it.
5 meters. 6 meters. I'm usually right.
(To be fair, most people in this job can do that.)
🏘️ What is a model home park?
Imagine an auto mall — but instead of cars, it's houses.
Several homebuilders each build a full-size home on one site,
so you can walk through all of them and compare in a single afternoon.
One thing they don't tell you: these houses are much bigger than what people
actually build. A real home is usually less than half the size.
🍜 Lunch: pork udon
− Ichimi and shichimi
Japan has two red chili powders.
Shichimi is seven spices, for aroma. Ichimi is pure chili, for heat.
Most udon shops put a small box of it on your table. Add as much as you want.
− Light broth and dark broth
In western Japan the udon broth is light and clear.
In eastern Japan it's dark. I grew up in the west,
so the first time I saw a dark bowl in Tokyo, I was genuinely shocked.
− Prices
Ohagi (rice cake with sweet red bean paste): ¥230 (about $1.55)
Lumonde Ice: ¥243 (about $1.65) — a small luxury on a hot day
