Learn how to judge a sailboat's knockdown readiness before you buy, in my ebook The Bluewater Buyer's Manual:
https://everydaysailing.gumroad.com/l...
What actually stays put when an ocean sailboat is knocked to 90 degrees? This ranking compares seven proven bluewater sailboats by the systems that matter after the mast comes back up: ballast attachment, keel structure, rudder protection, watertight openings, interior restraints, and the crew’s ability to reach pumps and steering.
From the Tayana 37 and Valiant 40 to the Oyster 485, Island Packet 38, Garcia Exploration 45, Boreal 47, and Amel Super Maramu, each boat takes a different approach. Encapsulated ballast removes one vulnerable joint. Skeg-hung rudders protect steering. Watertight bulkheads contain flooding. Positive locker catches, secured batteries, captive companionway closures, and properly supported tanks can keep one knockdown from becoming a chain of failures.
This is not a beauty contest or a simple comparison of displacement and keel weight. It is a buyer-focused look at whether an offshore cruising sailboat can right itself and still preserve steering, electrical power, access, and a usable interior. The final inspection method applies to any used bluewater sailboat, regardless of brand.
