Queenstown (Komani), Eastern Cape – A Town Shaped by History Situated among the beautiful landscapes of the Eastern Cape, between the Stormberg and Amatola mountain regions, lies the historic town once known as Queenstown, and today officially called Komani. From high above, its streets, historic buildings and beautiful churches reveal a town whose story stretches back to the turbulent days of South Africa's frontier history. Queenstown was founded in 1853 under the direction of Sir George Cathcart, Governor of the Cape Colony. The town was established as a military and administrative outpost during the Frontier Wars and was named in honour of Queen Victoria. Its unusual layout remains one of its most distinctive features: the town was designed around a central Hexagon, with major streets radiating outwards. The Hexagon was originally intended as a defensive refuge for the town's residents, although it was never used for that purpose. As peace gradually came to the region, Queenstown developed into an important centre for the surrounding farming communities. The town became known for commerce, wagon building and education, while the surrounding district supported sheep and cattle farming. During the late 19th century, impressive public buildings and churches were constructed from the beautiful local sandstone, giving the town much of the historic character that can still be appreciated today. The churches of Queenstown have long been an important part of the town's heritage. The Anglican, Methodist and Dutch Reformed congregations all established prominent places of worship, reflecting the communities that helped shape the growing town. Among them is St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, whose history reaches back to the earliest years of Queenstown and whose impressive building remains an important architectural landmark. In 2016, Queenstown officially became known as Komani, a name connected to the Komani River and reflecting the town's place within the cultural and natural landscape of the Eastern Cape. Today, the town carries both names in the memories of those who know and love it—Komani, with a history that will always include the story of Queenstown.
