On December 11, 1941, the Marines of Wake Island’s 1st Defense Battalion let Rear Admiral Sadamichi Kajioka’s invasion force close to shore before opening fire with their 5-inch coastal guns. Their fire sank the Japanese destroyer Hayate, damaged other vessels, and helped force the first Japanese landing attempt to withdraw. This video breaks down the decision to hold fire, the limitations of Wake’s aging coast-defense guns, the geometry of the engagement, and how discipline, concealment, and surprise turned an exposed and isolated garrison into an effective coastal ambush.
