Nobody Broke The Law but Somebody Got Hurt
A small lakeside community is heading into a local election. A group of residents who care about the lake, led by an old volunteer, invites everyone running for office to come and speak to the voters.
Weeks earlier, the old man had written to the people already in power. He asked them to fight a permit that would let waste be stored near the water. He warned them the voters would remember if they did nothing. Then he added a friendly word: he liked the job they were doing and hoped they would win again. He signed it in the name of the whole group, though the words were his alone. The people in power did what he asked.
On the day of the gathering, one newcomer is handed a copy of the letter. She has a bad feeling about it. She quietly pulls the other newcomers aside before the doors open and shows them. Most had never seen it. They feel the game was set up before they arrived, and that the ones already in office knew the questions ahead of time.
One challenger walks out before it starts. He says he won't be pushed around or play along with someone else's agenda. The rest stay, because the room is full of neighbours who came to listen. Some say their piece about the letter from the stage, then answer the questions about the lake.
Afterward the old man owns up. He says the views were his, the signature was a mistake, and nobody else was to blame. He apologizes to his own people.
An official looks into it and says no rule was broken, because everyone is still free to vote as they please.
The gathering was meant to be about the water, and the letter took over the conversation.
