We Found The First Magic: The Gathering Tournament Tape

We’re going all the way back to 1994 for what may be some of the oldest surviving Magic: The Gathering tournament footage on the internet. No massive convention center. No feature-match stage. No slick broadcast setup. Just a small group of Magic players gathered in a basement, playing competitive MTG during the earliest days of the game. In this video, I react to this incredible piece of Magic history and take a look at what tournament Magic was actually like more than 30 years ago — the cards, the gameplay, the atmosphere, and just how different the game feels compared to modern MTG. For longtime Magic players, this is pure nostalgia. For newer players, it’s a fascinating look at a version of the game that almost feels like an entirely different era.
