In 1947, a Bedouin shepherd searching for a lost goat threw a stone into a cave and heard something shatter. What he found became the Dead Sea Scrolls: roughly 25,000 fragments from about 900 manuscripts. For 70 years, scholars believed they knew who wrote them. Then a 2020 study in the journal Cell did something no one had tried before: it read the DNA left in the parchment itself.
In this video, we break down:
✅ The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and the "jigsaw puzzle" problem scholars faced for decades
✅ The Essene hypothesis, and the contradictions that kept surfacing beneath it
✅ How a 2012 lunch conversation between a biblical scholar and a molecular biologist started it all
✅ How researchers collected DNA from parchment dust without cutting into a single scroll
✅ Why ancient DNA is so hard to recover, and the contamination controls used in the Uppsala lab
✅ Why cowhide fragments can't have been made in the desert, and what that says about where the scrolls came from
✅ How DNA showed that two versions of the Book of Jeremiah came from different animals and different places
✅ What the genetic evidence suggests about the Songs of the Sabbath Sacrifice and the Book of Isaiah
✅ Why the caves may look more like a "genizah," a sacred storage place, than one sect's private library
✅ What this means for how we understand Judaism and early Christianity in the Second Temple period
