What connects a made-up inventor in 1839 to a player who hit fifty home runs and stole fifty bases in one season? This is the complete history of baseball — the game that began with a myth and became America's pastime — from a rulebook written in New York to the biggest stages on Earth.
In this 14-minute documentary, we trace baseball's full journey: a game with no inventor — the Doubleday myth of 1839, Alexander Cartwright and the Knickerbocker rules of 1845, the first recorded game in Hoboken in 1846, and the first governing body in 1857; going professional — the Civil War spreading the game, the Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869, the National League of 1876, and the first modern World Series in 1903; scandal and the Sultan — the 1919 Black Sox, Babe Ruth and the live-ball era, the 1927 Murderers' Row, and Lou Gehrig's iron-man streak; breaking the colour line — the Negro Leagues of 1920, Jackie Robinson in 1947, Willie Mays' catch in 1954, and Roger Maris in 1961; the home run chase — Hank Aaron's 715th in 1974, Cal Ripken's streak, the 1998 race, and Barry Bonds' 73 in 2001; and the game today — the Red Sox breaking the curse in 2004, the Cubs ending 108 years of waiting in 2016, and Shohei Ohtani's 50-50 season in 2024.
