The Asia-Pacific is intrinsically a sea-facing domain, which makes maritime security a perennial concern. The major powers maintain blue-water navies to project power and influence. Cooperation between maritime states is integral to preserving regional stability. Some island countries do not have navies of their own, but still have an imperative to secure their marine resources against external exploitation. Building maritime capacity and situational awareness is a common challenge, from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific. This special session explores prospects for improving strategic stability among the major maritime powers, as well as empowering smaller states to boost their maritime security.
