At twenty-three, I travelled to the Philippines to search for her. Today, she is the only person in my immediate family I still have a relationship with. So how could I forgive the mother who left me while choosing to cut contact with other members of my family? In this video, I talk about the image I had of my mother as a child, the cultural and personal context I learned later, and the difference between understanding someone and excusing the harm they caused. I also share how philosophy, my time at a Buddhist center in Penang, conversations with Gen Konchog, and practices around impermanence, gratitude, and letting go prepared me to search for my mother. But finding her was not the same as forgiving her. Forgiveness became possible because she believed me, recognized the manipulation I had experienced, apologized for the pain she caused, and consistently showed me over time that she wanted to build a different relationship. This is not a video telling anyone that they have to forgive. Forgiveness, reconciliation, trust and access are different decisions. You are allowed to protect yourself. You are allowed to decide that a relationship cannot safely continue. And you do not owe anyone access to your life simply because they are family.
