Woodward String Quartet "Fragments" – Movement I from String Quartet No. 6: "Reflections" Composed by Jeremy Crosmer The opening movement of Jeremy Crosmer’s String Quartet No. 6: "Reflections" is titled “Fragments”, and sets the tone for a work that meditates on the meaning of American identity. Inspired by composers such as Copland, Bernstein, and Ives, Crosmer explores the idea that to be American is to be shaped by a mosaic of influences—each person’s story composed of cultural fragments that reflect their surroundings, ancestry, and relationships. This movement forms a melodic thread from those diverse elements, capturing both the individuality and shared resonance of the American experience. The music moves between textures and moods, gently suggesting the complexity and beauty of identity shaped through connection, memory, and hope.
