Historian Abul Fazl writes that the fort was in a miserable state… an old, crumbling structure of bricks… something the people called Badalgarh. The year is 1558. A fourteen-year-old Akbar ascends the throne. And with that moment, the destiny of Agra Fort begins to change. Akbar made a decision— this fort would become the nerve center of the Mughal Empire. Its walls would be so strong that even if the foundations of the empire shook, this fort would not. Architects were summoned from Persia and Europe. For the next eight years… more than 4,000 workers, masons and craftsmen from across the subcontinent toiled day and night. The use of red sandstone wasn’t just for beauty— it could withstand fire, cannons and harsh weather. But Akbar was not simply building a fort… he was sending a message: the Mughals were no longer invaders— they were here to stay. By 1573, the world’s most formidable fort stood complete. Badalgarh had transformed into the mighty Qila-e-Akbari.
