Sleep in a raft of sea otters and you will find dozens of animals floating on their backs, each one holding the paw of its neighbor so nobody drifts away in the night.
They slide down banks, wrestle, and carry a favorite flat stone in a pouch under one arm. They bond with the people who raise them, they are curious, and in South Asia fishermen have trained them to herd fish into nets. It all sounds like a pet that is already half trained. So why has nobody ever made one?
It is not only the law, and it is not bad owners. It is a coat of up to 160,000 hairs in every square centimeter, a body that burns about two and a half times the standard resting rate, and a quarter of its weight in fresh food every day. Add a daily hunt that a house cannot supply, a mind that needs company and work, a musk that marks every corner, and a set of teeth built for crushing shell.
The story runs through 34 orphaned giant otter pups hand-reared at Karanambu Ranch in Guyana, a Bangladeshi fishing family that works beside five otters, Gavin Maxwell's Mijbil at Camusfearna, and a 2018 survey that counted between 734 and 1,189 otters advertised online in just four months.
Some keepers do manage it, but only with the scale of a zoo or a fishing camp. The charm and the problem turn out to be the same body, and by the end you will know what you are really watching the next time an otter clip comes up on your phone.
