Arthur Fleck lets Gary live. Gary still walks out of that apartment terrified. What if that gap explains the whole movie? This Joker (2019) character analysis starts with a small card on a bus, follows Arthur through the TV fantasy, the subway, the bathroom dance and the door Gary can't open alone, and ends with Gary's testimony in Joker: Folie à Deux. My reading is that Arthur wants his intentions understood, but leaves very little room for anyone else's experience of him.
