They are widespread throughout South and South East Asia. Their legs are covered with whitish feathers. In India they are found in the North, Central and North Eastern parts of India. Their length is 19 to 21 inches, wingspan is 38 to 43.5 cm, and tail length is 19 to 22 cm. They are large greyish brown in color having bright yellow eyes and prominent ear tufts. They have a bluish grey beak and pale grey feet. Prefer altitudes ranging from 0 to 250 meters. Their wings and tail are strongly barred below. Breeding season is from November to April. They usually lay eggs in the abandoned stick nests of kites, raptors and other birds of prey. Post breeding, the juveniles disperse and establish in new locations within the range. They are non-migratory resident birds. They perch in tall trees, usually near water bodies, waiting to pounce upon birds and mammals. Diet mostly consists of birds such as crows, bee-eaters, parakeets, rollers, coucals, pigeons and doves.
01:51 Eurasian Eagle Owl
Also called as the “Uhu” is the most widely distributed Eagle Owl and the world’s largest owl. In India they are mainly distributed in the North Western parts of the country. Their length is 30 inches, wingspan is approximately 6 feet wide, and tail length is 23 to 31 cm. They have a deep orange eyes, large ear tufts and finely streaked buff underparts. Chin and throat are white with a brownish central streak. Females (4.6 kg) are larger than males (3.2 kg), but the males have upright ear tufts compared to females. Juveniles beg with a loud, slightly harsh, short hiss, which can be heard as far as 1 km. Predominantly, their diet is composed of small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, but they also prey on larger mammals and birds of varying sizes. Eagle-owls can live for up to 20 years in the wild. Based on studies, 68% of eagle owl deaths are caused due to electrocution.

Also known as Indian Eagle Owl or Bengal Eagle Owl are widely distributed throughout the Indian Subcontinent. Their length is 20 to 24 inches, wingspan is 35 to 43 cm, and tail length is 18.5 to 23 cm. They have a white throat with black stripes and their face is bordered by a thin black line. Nest is constructed on the ground on bare soil in shallow scrapes, and not on trees. A female lays one to six eggs, once a year that are glossy and white-cream in color. The incubation takes 33-34 days. They have two dark-colored feather tufts that look similar to horns. Their bill is hooked and is also brown in color. These magnificent owls have large rounded wings. Flight of the rock eagle owl is swift and rapid, but mainly silent due to the serrated margins of their soft feathers. They are also commonly known as the 'tiger of the night sky' because of their silent flight.
