Unable to reach Jantar Mantar or Mandi House, protesters regrouped outside INA Market in south Delhi on Saturday afternoon (October 10) and planned to march towards Dilli Haat. They had set out for the protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protesters say they were on the service road and not blocking traffic. About an hour after they gathered, police arrived and, without any warning, began dragging young men and women into buses. The Indian Express Hindi team saw policemen hurling abuses as they chased a protester, with a plainclothes policeman joining the chase. Journalists wearing press cards were also pulled and taken away, until police were told to leave those with ID cards alone. An officer struck our team's mic. Inside a packed bus, police ordered the windows shut. One detainee broke a window, saying people were suffocating, and his arm was left bleeding. Another protester's T-shirt was torn. Several people say they had nothing to do with the protest. One was a young man filling petrol in his scooter, another had come to buy flowers for a Shraddh puja, and a third was walking because INA Metro station was shut. A JNU student says not even North Korea is this authoritarian. Central Delhi stayed calm behind layers of barricades, but this is what happened at INA. Watch the full ground report.
