Hiking Mile of Ledges and Tory’s Den in Terryville, Connecticut.
This trail covers parts of Terryville and Burlington, Connecticut. There’s a very small parking lot at the beginning of the trail which you can find by following the parking area from AllTrails. This hike is a lollipop loop, which means that the first section is an out and back trail and the middle of the hike is a loop.
The first section is a wider old dirt road. It’s part of the Tunxis Trail which is a CFPA blue blazed trail in Connecticut. This part of the trail is fairly easy. Once we hit the junction of the blue/yellow trail, we chose to go left around the loop and stayed on the Tunxis Trail. I would recommend going clockwise around the loop as we did this time.
About 1/10 of a mile on the Tunxis Trail you will come to Tory’s Den. Stay on the Tunxis trail rather than following a shortcut within AllTrails. If you follow the shortcut, you will miss Tory’s Den. The Tunxis trail has some elevation to it both uphill and downhill in this area. You’ll see some residential homes in about a mile or so. AllTrails will have you go right at a junction near this area. There’s a considerable downhill until you get to a road where you will take a right. You’ll have to stay on the road for perhaps a little less than ½ a mile.
At this point, you’ll head back into the woods and be heading in the direction of Mile of Ledges. This trail is marked with blue and yellow blazes. After you leave the view of the small pond, you’ll get to quite a few sections of Ledges where the trail gets its namesake. There will be a good deal of rock scrambling in this area. In a couple of spots, you’ll be hiking in between some narrow rock sections.
Eventually, you’ll come to a junction of the blue Tunxis trail where you will take a left to get back to the parking spot. This is one of my favorite hikes which are not too far or long in Connecticut.
