Beenie Man went on ITV News and said it plainly: "The money comes in and you nuh see where it go." He was talking about the roughly $1.7 billion in donations that poured into Jamaica after Category 5 Hurricane Melissa tore through the island in October 2025.
An Auditor General's report found that ODPEM — the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management — had spent just $26.2 million of $1.44 billion in cash donations by February 23, 2026. That's 1.8 percent. A new CAPRI report dropped on the storm's one-year anniversary confirming the same figure, along with gaps in roof-repair records and procurement red flags.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness fired back at the Black River Hospital reopening, calling Beenie Man's claim "a lie" and telling Jamaicans not to "tear down your country." State Minister Abka Fitz-Henley went further, calling the comments irresponsible and pointing to Beenie Man's known PNP ties. The government's position: $750 million went to roof repairs with nearly 600 roofs restored, $700 million to modular housing bases, and $100 million to semi-permanent units in Westmoreland — all part of an $84 billion total Melissa response.
But 136 Jamaicans were still in shelters as of October 23. And Buju Banton, Konshens, Tanya Stephens, and Spragga Benz all lined up behind Beenie Man, rejecting the idea that Jamaican artists just "wave the flag" to sell tickets.
This video breaks down where the money actually went, what both sides are claiming, and what the audits really show. Watch to the end and decide for yourself.
