At exactly six thirty in the morning my phone buzzed with a call from my mother. Her voice was giddy with malicious joy as she announced that my sister had finally won. Your husband moved in with her last night my father chimed in telling me not to embarrass myself by begging him to come back. I did not scream or cry. I simply put the phone on speaker. My husband lying right beside me cleared his throat and told them they really needed to see the desperate messages their golden child had sent him. The line went dead silent. My name is Rochelle and I am thirty two years old. As a forensic accountant who investigates corporate financial crimes for a living I deal with liars every single day. I track missing money uncover hidden assets and expose frauds. But the most skilled manipulators I have ever encountered in my entire life were the people who raised me. Growing up in a wealthy African American neighborhood in Atlanta my parents Valerie and Desmond were absolutely obsessed with social status. They cared deeply about country club memberships designer labels and projecting an image of absolute perfection to their elite circles.
To them my younger sister Dominique was their absolute masterpiece. She was twenty nine effortlessly beautiful and built her entire life around being a high society darling. I was the darker skinned serious daughter who preferred complex spreadsheets to fancy charity galas. My parents never missed a single opportunity to remind me that I was too dry too analytical and lacked the feminine charm required to keep a successful man happy. Even when I married Marcus a brilliant commercial real estate developer who built his massive company from nothing my parents looked down on him. They preferred generational wealth and old money connections. They preferred men they could easily intimidate and control.
Which brings me to that fateful Tuesday morning. The sun had barely started to peek through the thick blinds of our master bedroom when my phone shattered the quiet. The caller ID flashed my mothers name. I answered groggily expecting an emergency or bad news. Instead I heard the cheerful clinking of coffee cups and my mothers unmistakable triumphant laugh.
Good morning Rochelle she sang out her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. I hope you are sitting down though I suppose you are already alone in that big empty bed.
I rubbed my tired eyes thoroughly confused by her bizarre tone. Mom what are you talking about it is barely dawn here.
My father took over the line his tone brisk businesslike and entirely devoid of any parental sympathy. We are calling to check on you Rochelle. Dominique just called us with the news. We know Marcus finally packed his bags and left you last night.
I froze but not from heartbreak or devastation. I froze because Marcus was currently snoring softly into my left shoulder his heavy arm draped securely across my waist. I carefully reached out and tapped the speaker button on my phone setting the device gently on the mattress right between us.
