🦁 ABOUT THIS SIGHTING
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
It is 17:24 on the 2nd of August 2026. The light in the Maasai Mara is beginning its slow turn to gold — the hour when the savannah softens and the predators begin to move. This pride has already done its work. Earlier in the day, they brought down a buffalo on the open plains — a formidable kill requiring the coordinated power of the entire pride. Now, bellies full and energy conserved, they are on the move — walking with the magnificent, unhurried authority that only a lion can project — directly past our stationary safari vehicles, close enough to hear the soft pad of each footfall on the dry grass.
What you are watching is one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth: a lion pride in full possession of their world.
The buffalo is the Maasai Mara lion's most prized and dangerous quarry. A full-grown Cape buffalo can weigh over 700 kg, is armed with massive curved horns, and is capable of killing a lion with a single charge. Bringing one down requires strategy, coordination, and extraordinary physical power — typically with lionesses executing the hunt while males assist in the final takedown of such large, dangerous prey. A successful buffalo kill feeds the entire pride and can last several days, drawing in vultures, hyenas, jackals, and marabou storks in the hours and days that follow.
The Maasai Mara holds between 850 and 900 lions — the highest density of lions in Kenya and one of the highest concentrations anywhere in Africa. This footage was captured at the very peak of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration — when an estimated 1.5 million wildebeest, 400,000 zebras, and 200,000 Thomson's gazelles flood the Mara ecosystem from Tanzania's Serengeti, bringing the reserve's predator activity to its annual zenith. In August, the Mara's lions are at their most active — well fed, emboldened, and frequently seen on kills in the open plains.

🌍 ABOUT THE MAASAI MARA
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Maasai Mara National Reserve covers 1,510 square kilometres of open savannah grassland, riverine forest, and rolling hills in southwestern Kenya. Together with Tanzania's Serengeti, it forms the greater Mara-Serengeti ecosystem — one of the most biodiverse and ecologically significant wildlife areas on the planet. It is widely regarded as the finest all-round safari destination in Africa, and is the only place on Earth where the Great Wildebeest Migration — described by many as the 8th Wonder of the World — can be witnessed in full spectacle.
