How did the 12 Apostles Really Die? Most Stories Aren't What You Think

He killed James, the brother of John, with a sword. That's the sentence. One line in the 12th chapter of Acts. No scene, no last words, no crowd, no trial, no aftermath. The text doesn't even slow down The next verse moves straight on to Peter's arrest, and James is never mentioned again. In the entire New Testament, that one line is the only account of an apostle dying in the course of the church's mission. Now put it next to the stories of the disciples' deaths you may have heard. Peter crucified upside down. Paul beheaded outside Rome. Thomas run through with spears in India. Bartholomew skinned alive. Simon sawn in half. None of that is in the Bible, not one word of it. So where did it come from? Before we go anywhere with that, there's one correction to make, and I'd rather make it than have you make it. The Bible does record another apostle's death: Judas. Matthew has him hanging himself. Acts describes his end differently, and more graphically. So the honest form of the claim isn't one death. It's this: only one apostle is recorded in scripture as being killed for following Jesus in the course of the church's mission. How did the apostles die? How did the 12 disciples die?
