For a generation, the Gracie family seemed unbeatable. They had built a myth around Brazilian jiu-jitsu — until a Japanese catch wrestler in a borrowed pro-wrestling mask walked into it and started taking it apart.
This is the story of Kazushi Sakuraba, the man they called the Gracie Hunter — and how, across 13 months in PRIDE Fighting Championships, he defeated four members of the Gracie dynasty: Royler, Royce, Renzo, and Ryan.
We trace Sakuraba's path from Akita, Japan, inspired as a kid by Tiger Mask, through amateur wrestling at Chuo University, into the shoot-style world of UWFi under Kiyoshi Tamura, Yoji Anjo, and British catch wrestling master Billy Robinson. We follow the historic echo of the Kimura submission — the same hold Masahiko Kimura used to defeat Hélio Gracie in 1951 — and the 90-minute war with Royce Gracie at the Tokyo Dome, decided not by a referee but by a thrown towel, the very stoppage method the Gracies had designed to protect their own fighters.
And we ask the question rarely asked about the Gracie Hunter: what did the hunting cost him?
This is deep, cited documentary storytelling — no highlight reels, no hype. Just the real history of the fighting arts.
