Part 2 of the Bundy to Birdsville run picks up in Stonehenge, where overnight storms have the outback roads on a knife edge. Graham Cahill, Liv and Tommy take the John Egan Pioneer Track for a look at the country ahead, then watch a dry river course run for the first time in eight months. They pull up at the JC Hotel ruins for the story of the station owner who tore the roof off the pub, eat tinned mutton on white bread, and push west to a free camp on the banks of Cooper Creek - the same water Graham once got barged across in a flood year. The servo at Windorah is shut, so it is one tank of fuel all the way to the edge of the desert. Aired down to 15 psi, Graham's Y62 Patrol and Liv and Tommy's 500hp, 1500Nm Ford F-250 cut fresh tracks up the QAA Line and past Eyre Creek, the gatekeeper that shuts the whole run down after rain. Camp is a clay pan in the middle of nowhere with feral camels for company, and dinner is a camel hump curry that gets well away from Graham. Two thermometers read 44 degrees. Six days out from the seasonal closure there is one job left, and overnight wind has built a fresh foot of sand over the lip at the top that nobody has broken through in months. Then it is a swim at the Pelican Point billabong and a cold one at the Birdsville Hotel, a pub that has been standing since 1884.
