“The Ultraphobic Tour featured Warrant’s revamped mid‑90s lineup: Jani Lane up front, Erik Turner on rhythm guitar, Rick Steier on lead, Jerry Dixon on bass, and James Kottak on drums — a harder, post‑grunge configuration built for the band’s reinvention.”
Warrant’s Ultraphobic Lineup Shake‑Up (1994–1995)
In the mid‑1990s, Warrant faced one of the biggest turning points in their career. As the glam‑metal era collapsed and the grunge movement took over, the band was forced to reinvent themselves — and that meant major lineup changes. The Ultraphobic album and 1995 tour weren’t performed by the classic Cherry Pie lineup. They were built on a harder, darker, post‑grunge foundation, and the band’s roster shifted to match that new direction.
Steven Sweet, Warrant’s original drummer, was let go in 1994 during a full management‑driven restructuring. It wasn’t personal and it wasn’t scandal — the band needed a heavier, more aggressive drummer to fit the evolving sound. Sweet’s clean, glam‑styled approach didn’t match the direction Warrant was being pushed toward. He was replaced by James Kottak, whose harder‑hitting style reshaped the band’s live energy for the Ultraphobic era.
At the same time, Joey Allen, Warrant’s longtime lead guitarist, also exited the band. He didn’t join another group or tour elsewhere — he stepped away from the music industry entirely. Joey returned to his engineering career, choosing stability over the chaos of the mid‑90s rock scene. During the Ultraphobic recording sessions and the 1995 tour, Joey Allen was completely absent from the music world and wouldn’t return to Warrant until the mid‑2000s.
These changes created a new lineup:
Jani Lane, Erik Turner, Rick Steier, Jerry Dixon, and James Kottak — the configuration that carried Warrant through the Ultraphobic era. Smaller venues, heavier songs, and a band fighting to evolve in a changing world. This video breaks down exactly how and why the lineup changed, and what happened to the members who weren’t there.
