25 American Companies That Promised Lifetime Jobs — Then Moved Everything to China

👉 Which company did your family work for, and what were they promised? Tell me in the comments. Somebody ought to remember. For most of the 20th century, a job at the right American company meant a job for life. You walked through the gates at 18, and you walked back out at 65 with a pension and a house you owned. Nobody wrote that promise down. Everybody understood it. Then, one quiet decision at a time, the work moved across the Pacific. From the Etch A Sketch in Bryan, Ohio, to Levi’s in San Francisco, Westclox in Peru, Illinois, and IBM in Endicott, New York, this is the story of 25 companies, the towns that were built around them, and what happened when the promise ended.
