At the edge of the sky, where the burning rainbow bridge Bifröst meets Asgard, stands a god who never sleeps. He can hear the grass growing and see a hundred leagues by day or night. And when Ragnarök comes, his horn will be the sound that wakes the gods for their final battle.
This is the story of Heimdall, the watchman of the gods.
In this video, we explore:
• Yggdrasil, the nine worlds and the burning bridge Bifröst
• The mystery of Heimdall's birth from nine mothers, the waves of the sea
• His golden teeth, his horse Gulltoppr and the horn Gjallarhorn
• Rígsþula: how Heimdall walked among humans and fathered the order of society
• His rivalry with Loki and their battle as seals over Freyja's necklace
• Ragnarök, and the final duel between the guardian and the trickster
Sources: the Poetic Edda (Völuspá, Hyndluljóð, Rígsþula, Lokasenna, Þrymskviða) and Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda.
