The Main Ground Combat System was meant to replace both the Leopard 2 and the Leclerc, entering service in 2035 with full capability by 2040. At the Franco-German Defence and Security Council, Macron and Merz reduced it to a platform-independent research effort with a proof of concept as its goal, only weeks after the manned fighter at the heart of FCAS was ended.
