Beginning of spring in Lindau, Germany - longing for Lake Constance

The historic old town is located in the Insel district, which has an area of ​​0.69 km² and has around 2,830 inhabitants. The island's population was already significantly higher; in the 1900 census, for example, it was found to be 5,853. The island formerly consisted of three sub-islands (rear island, main island and castle/Römerschanze). In 1968, the P5 parking lot was built on the rear island. The island is connected to the mainland by the railway causeway and road bridge. Lindau also includes the small island of Hoy, which was created as an artificial bathing island in the 1920s. There is also a block of gneiss in the shallow water, about 40 meters from the so-called Hintere Insel (part west of the railway embankment; also called the “Western Island”), which is called Hexenstein. This is no longer part of the city area. The southern part of the urban area is relatively densely built up along the shoreline. Outside this settlement area there are incorporated villages in the northern part, of which Oberreitnau and Unterreitnau are the largest. The area is primarily used for agriculture, with fruit growing dominating large parts; the meadows and cultivated areas are interrupted by forest areas. With the mainland municipalities of Schachen, Aeschach, Reutin and Zech alone (from west to east), the city of Lindau has more than 12 km of Lake Constance shoreline.
