Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey is spectacular along its entire length, as it traverses gorges, canyons, and a vast valley. The trail leads through the picturesque Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Nature Reserve – a massive gorge carved by the Guadalhorce River, whose vertical walls reach up to 700 meters deep. The history of this extraordinary "aerial" path, suspended on rock faces more than 100 meters above the abyss, dates back to the early 20th century. It was built between the Gaitanejo and El Chorro waterfalls to facilitate the transport of materials and the movement of workers maintaining the local hydroelectric power plant. In 1921, King Alfonso XIII inaugurated this grand structure by walking along the path leading to the Guadalhorce Dam, and since then, the route has been commonly known as the "Caminito del Rey," or "Royal Path."
