Where can you find squid from shore, and how do you choose the right fishing spot based on weather and sea conditions?
In this Squid Fishing Guide, I'll show you how to find productive squid fishing locations along the coastline, how to identify suitable sea conditions, and how to use a slow bottom retrieve to catch reef squid from shore.
Finding squid isn't just about choosing the right squid jig. Understanding the coastline, checking the weather, and knowing where squid are likely to gather can make a big difference in your fishing results.
🎣 WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS VIDEO
✅ How to find squid fishing spots along the coast
✅ Why weather and wave height matter for shore squid fishing
✅ How to catch squid from sandy beaches
✅ How to use a slow bottom retrieve with squid jigs
✅ How to recognize a squid taking your lure
✅ Where to look for squid when the sea becomes rougher
✅ Why sheltered lagoons can be productive squid fishing locations
🌊 1. CHECK THE WEATHER BEFORE SQUID FISHING
Before choosing a fishing location, I always check the weather and sea conditions.
For the shore fishing techniques shown in this video, I prefer calm water with waves around 20–30 cm or less. Completely calm conditions are even better.
Calm water makes it easier to control the squid jig, feel what is happening near the bottom, and recognize subtle squid strikes.
🏖️ 2. HOW TO FIND SQUID ON SANDY BEACHES
When the sea is calm, sandy beaches can offer excellent opportunities for shore squid fishing.
You can walk along the coastline, explore different areas, and cast your squid jig as far as possible.
The technique I use is a slow retrieve close to the sandy bottom.
Instead of aggressive jerking movements, I slowly turn the reel handle and allow the lure to move across the natural sand ripples on the seabed.
My retrieve is simple:
• Make 1–2 turns of the reel handle and pause.
• Make another 2–3 turns and pause again.
• Keep the lure moving slowly near the bottom.
• Pay attention to small changes in resistance.
You can often feel the lure gently bouncing across the sandy bottom through your fishing rod.
🦑 3. HOW TO RECOGNIZE A SQUID STRIKE
Squid don't strike like most fish.
Sometimes catching a squid feels like hooking a plastic bag, a wet piece of cloth, or something heavy in the water.
Instead of a sharp bite, you may notice a small increase in resistance.
Occasionally, it can even feel like your lure has become stuck on a rock.
Learning to recognize this unusual sensation is an important skill in squid fishing.
🌊 4. WHERE TO FIND SQUID WHEN WAVES GET BIGGER
When wave height increases to around 30–40 cm, I start looking for more protected fishing locations.
Sheltered lagoons, calm coastal pockets, and areas protected from direct wave action can become useful alternatives.
These locations may provide calmer water where squid can move in and where you can maintain better control over your lure.
The key is learning to adapt your fishing location to the sea conditions rather than fishing the same spot every time.
🎯 THE MOST IMPORTANT SQUID FISHING LESSON
Successful squid fishing starts before your first cast.
Check the weather, study the coastline, find suitable water conditions, and adjust your fishing technique to the location.
Whether you're a beginner learning how to catch squid or an experienced angler looking for better shore fishing spots, these practical tips can help you understand where and how to search for squid.
This guide is based on my personal shore fishing experience targeting reef squid in coastal waters.
