Welcome to another urban sketching journey! 🏛️ Today, I’m sketching the Assumption Cathedral (Dormition Cathedral) in the historic Kolomna Kremlin, Russia — a place where architecture, history, and everyday life come together in one remarkable square. The history of the cathedral reaches back to the late 14th century. The present five-domed building was constructed between 1672 and 1682, replacing an earlier cathedral connected with the era of Prince Dmitry Donskoy. The older building was dismantled, and some of its white stone was reused in the foundations of the cathedral we see today. Коломенский Кремль The cathedral stands at the heart of Cathedral Square, the historic civic and religious center of medieval Kolomna. Around it, different periods of Russian architecture meet within the Kolomna Kremlin — a fortified complex whose stone-and-brick walls were built between 1525 and 1531 under Grand Prince Vasily III. Коломенский Кремль What first attracted me to this view was the rhythm of the architecture: the white walls, the golden central dome, the darker green domes surrounding it, the vertical crosses against the blue sky, and the small figures moving through the square below. In my sketch, I’m not trying to reproduce every architectural detail. Instead, I want to capture the structure, color, atmosphere, and visual character of this historic place through pen and watercolor. If you enjoy discovering architecture and cities through sketching, I hope you’ll join me for this journey. 👇 Subscribe for more urban sketching, architecture, and pen & watercolor videos:    / @zhijunsketch   ⏱️ Chapters 00:11 – Pen sketch: structure, proportion & main shapes 02:34 – Watercolor: bringing the cathedral and square to life 🖌️ Art Supplies I Used Pen: Pelikan Fountain Pen with EF Nib Ink: Noodler’s Waterproof Ink Watercolor: Rembrandt Watercolor Paint Paper: 100% Cotton Cold Pressed Watercolor Paper 📌 Reference Photo & Community Download The reference photo of Kolomna Cathedral Square and my finished watercolor sketch will be shared in the Community tab, so you can study the scene and sketch it at your own pace.
