Mitten im französischen Lothringen erhebt sich ein beeindruckender Zeuge der europäischen Industriegeschichte: der Hochofen U4. Seit dem Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde auf diesem riesigen Gelände Roheisen produziert. Einst standen hier sechs Hochöfen, und Tausende Menschen arbeiteten zwischen Feuer, Rauch, Stahl und gewaltigen Maschinen. Im Jahr 1991 endete die Produktion – das letzte Feuer erlosch, und ein großer Teil des Werkes wurde stillgelegt. Heute ist der erhaltene Hochofen U4 ein offizielles Industriedenkmal. Für nur vier Euro Eintritt kann man den Besucherbereich auf einem festgelegten Rundweg erkunden und dabei einen eindrucksvollen Einblick in die Geschichte der lothringischen Eisen- und Stahlindustrie gewinnen. Doch am Ende des Geländes befindet sich noch ein ganz anderer Bereich. Hinter dem offiziellen Besucherweg liegt die ehemalige Energie- und Gebläsezentrale des Werkes – in der Urbex-Szene bekannt als ALIENWORKS. In der riesigen Halle stehen noch immer historische Turbinen, Gebläse, Rohrleitungen und alte Schaltanlagen. Besonders beeindruckend ist die Leitwarte mit ihren geschwungenen Treppen, langen Schaltpulten und zahllosen Instrumenten. Wo einst Maschinen dröhnten und der gesamte Hochofenbetrieb gesteuert wurde, herrscht heute völlige Stille. Staub bedeckt die Schalter, Rost frisst sich durch das Metall, und durch die großen Fenster fällt Licht auf eine Anlage, in der die Zeit scheinbar stehen geblieben ist. In the heart of French Lorraine stands an impressive witness to Europe’s industrial past: the U4 blast furnace. Pig iron was produced on this vast industrial site from the late 19th century onward. Six blast furnaces once stood here, and thousands of people worked among fire, smoke, steel and enormous machinery. Production finally ended in 1991 – the last fire went out, and large parts of the plant were shut down. Today, the preserved U4 blast furnace is an official industrial monument. For an admission fee of just four euros, visitors can explore the accessible part of the site along a designated route and gain an impressive insight into the history of Lorraine’s iron and steel industry. But at the far end of the site lies a very different area. Beyond the official visitor route stands the former power and blowing station of the steelworks – known in the urbex community as ALIENWORKS. Historic turbines, blowers, pipelines and old electrical control systems still remain inside the enormous hall. One of its most remarkable features is the control room, with its curved staircases, long control consoles and countless instruments. Where machines once thundered and the entire blast furnace operation was controlled, there is now complete silence. Dust covers the switches, rust eats into the metal, and light pours through the huge windows onto a facility where time appears to have stood still.
