I Wonder

Song of the Week: 09/13/2026 “I Wonder” © 2017; Lawrence J. Pharr - For Donna This song has a special place in my heart. A dear friend, Donna, was having dinner with us one evening. Her health was failing, and after dinner we began talking about songs she would like for her memorial service. She had been compiling a list for years. Toward the end of our evening together, I shared with her a song I had almost finished writing: “I Wonder.” Not long afterward, Donna passed away. My wife and I sang this song for the first time at her memorial. Yesterday, as I was reflecting on September 11 and thinking about the brokenness, sorrow, fear, hatred, and pain that mark so much of our world, this song came to mind again. “I Wonder” begins with a question: What would it be like to live in a world where love reigns? The Bible gives us an answer. There is coming a day when Christ will return, when God will make all things new—when there will be no more death, mourning, crying, or pain. No more sin. No more hatred or fighting. And at the center of that hope is not simply a better world. Jesus reigns. The One who died for us, rose again, and now sits at the right hand of the Father will one day be fully revealed as King. And we will join the redeemed from every nation, tribe, people, and language in worshiping the Lamb. As I sing this song this week, I am reminded that our hope is not found in the world becoming what we wish it could be. Our hope is in the return of Jesus Christ. Until that day, may we live as people who know that the King is already reigning—and look forward with hope to the day when His reign will be seen by all.
