FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss the upcoming NOIR CITY Hollywood and TCMFF film festivals, female characters in noir that go beyond the good girl and the femme fatale, the many films based on The Lonely Hearts Killers, authors Ross McDonald and Robert B. Parker and more. Want your question answered in a future episode? We solicit questions from our email subscribers in our monthly newsletters. Note: Eddie will not be able to answer questions posted during the livestream nor ones left on our social media accounts This week’s questions: 1. What are some "Lost "Noir Films that you would love to find? 2. I recall that you mentioned a Paramount fire destroyed many films, including the only known print of Woman on the Run, that you fortunately rescued. Were any other film noirs lost forever in that fire? 3. I have seen the term "transitional noir" being brought up. Do you subscribe to this concept, or do you believe that there was film noir that went directly to Neo-Noir? 4. My father insisted that the end of “Angels with Dirty Faces” showed that Rocky Sullivan actually became a coward, my interpretation was that he was doing what his friend, Father Connelly implored him to do. What do you say? 5. How do you differentiate between what classifies as a noir or a gangster film? 6. In Jenny Lamour, did Louis Jouvet end up with the blonde in the end? My tape ran out right at the tail end when Jouvet says I have someone waiting for me. 7. Why do contemporary film credits go on and on, while 1940s films only seem to run about a dozen or so names, or even less? 8. I'd LOVE and appreciate both you and Ann talking about the major / many types of women in film noir. — What would you name as the major categories of women in film noir? — What actresses stand out in each category as excellent examples of that type/archetype? — What films do you recommend seeing these examples best expressed? — Which actresses could play many of these types well? 9. Have either of you seen the Mexican Noir film “El,” by Luis Bunuel. Also, speaking of Mexico, TCM recently showed “Deep Crimson,” Arturo Ripstein's remake of “The Honeymoon Killers,” and I'd like your thoughts about him as a (not only) Noir director still working away. 10. Online I read there was an alternate ending of Dark Corner written, though it didn't say it was filmed. Do you know how things played out in this alternate ending? Also, I'm very impressed by the lighting work, but no LD is listed the DVD and IMDB doesn't list one either. Does this mean the lighting was set up by the camera man, Joseph MacDonald or Tal Gabani, listed as the second cameraman and electrical department, or just that the LD went uncredited? 11. What happened in the 70's that made the film quality so terrible? It seems like every TV program or movie appeared to be blurrier and grainier in the quality. The audio sound quality also seemed to suffer. 12. Do you see noir elements in The Joker 2019? 13. I often read that Ross McDonald is widely considered the heir to Hammett and Chandler yet his works don't seem to get the same buzz or acclaim as those two. I also think his novels, while entertaining, don't quite measure up. Maybe it's just me? What do you think? 14. Wondering what your thoughts are on Robert B Parker's mystery novels and the various adaptations of his work? 15. Is there a particular movie critic you each like to read often? 16. Mi asked, I know all of our favorite genre of film is film noir/crime/heist and Anne has stated her love of horror but what is Eddie's second favorite genre? What could be your next favorite film genre, period, or style - either to restore or to introduce? 17. Is that your office where you are when we see you in the zoom Thursday nights? Is it possible for both of you to move to a different room in your houses for us to see something different?
