Everyone knows the woman who won: Hürrem. This is the story of the woman she defeated.
Mahidevran arrived in Suleiman's household as an enslaved girl earning four coins a day. She became the mother of his eldest
son, Prince Mustafa, guarded him against poison for twenty years, and lost him in the most terrible way. She fell into poverty
in Bursa, unable to pay her own servants, until she was rescued by the last person anyone expected: Hürrem's own son. And in
the end, she outlived Hürrem, Suleiman, and every one of Suleiman's children.
