In 1866, a student fired five shots at the man who was about to create Germany. Two hit him and bounced off a rib.
This is the full story of Otto von Bismarck: a broke, hard-drinking gambler who failed at every job he tried, survived a duel over a cigar and an assassination attempt on Berlin's main boulevard, and became the most powerful man in Europe. He took forty German states and fought three wars in seven years to forge them into one empire, built the world's first national pension and health insurance to buy the workers' loyalty, and kept the peace in Europe for twenty years, until a young Kaiser threw him out.
Animated on a satellite map of Europe, with the borders as they really were.
