Joe and Alina run Slava Ukraine, a metal fundraiser for Ukraine based in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Joe is Scottish and manages Saor. Alina is from Kharkiv and plays guitar on the Edinburgh scene. They started in 2022 with what was meant to be a one-off gig, and they're still at it almost five years later. Their Ukrainian merch and bakery stalls now turn up at festivals from Wanlockhead to Estonia. We talk about how a Saor show in Kharkiv in 2019 started it all, bringing 1914 to Scotland for the first time, meeting Dmytro in Lviv, where the money goes, pro-russian hecklers at the Edinburgh demos, and Alina's trip home to Kharkiv and Dnipro under jet-powered drones. Then a quick-fire round: Zhyvchyk or Irn-Bru, Obolon or Tennent's, salo or black pudding. And at the end they announce the support act for 1914 in Glasgow.
