I Went to China’s Famous Rural Market at 6 AM

I visited a famous rural market in Feixian, Shandong, China, starting around 6 AM. This traditional market is popular with local people in Shandong and has been part of everyday life for many years. After becoming popular online, it has also attracted visitors from outside the area who want to experience the food and atmosphere for themselves. On this trip, I explore the market and discover some of Shandong’s most interesting local foods — from sizzling Linyi-style chicken and handmade dumplings to lamb soup, pork soup, wontons, scallion pancakes, pan-fried buns and traditional pastries. I also meet Xiao Pang, a cook who has become well known online for his traditional dish Dao Yu Ci (捣鱼刺). Beyond the food, this market shows another side of rural China — local farmers selling vegetables, freshly made products, traditional sauces and everyday goods.
