There’s nothing quite like living in a van while exploring the raw beauty of Tasmania’s rugged landscape. Waking up with the sunrise, parking beside secluded beaches, and hiking through wild terrain—all while having your home on wheels—is the ultimate way to experience the island’s magic. This week, my journey took me to the stunning Remarkable Cave, a nearby blowhole, and a perfect camping spot on Pirate Road. Here's a snapshot of my adventure.
First stop, Remarkable Cave, and wow—it lives up to its name. Tucked just outside of Port Arthur, this natural wonder feels like something out of a dream. The short walk from the parking area down to the cave is easy, and the views along the way are breathtaking. As you approach the cave, it reveals itself dramatically: a natural tunnel carved through the rock, opening onto the wild Tasman Sea.
What makes Remarkable Cave so, well, remarkable is the view through its archway. As you look through the cave, the opening frames the ocean on the other side, creating a perfect window to the waves crashing in the distance. It’s mesmerizing, especially with the way the light dances on the water, turning it a deep, shifting blue. The power of the sea is humbling here, and standing at the mouth of the cave, you can feel the ancient forces that shaped this landscape.
After the cave, I explored a nearby blowhole—an unexpected bonus! It’s not far from Remarkable Cave and, like most of Tasmania’s coastal gems, it feels a bit hidden away, as though you’ve stumbled upon a secret. The blowhole was in full force during my visit, with waves slamming into an underground tunnel and shooting bursts of spray high into the air. There’s something thrilling about watching the ocean’s raw power up close, hearing the whoosh of water and the crash of waves echoing through the rocks.
Standing there, with the wind whipping around me and the sea roaring below, it was hard not to feel completely alive, connected to the wild energy of the Tasmanian coast. Moments like this remind me why I love van life—having the freedom to explore these hidden wonders, with no schedule but the rhythm of the day.
After a full day of exploring, I headed back to my van to find the perfect spot to camp for the night. That’s when I stumbled upon Pirate Road—a place that sounded just as adventurous as my day had been. The campground I found was simple but perfect, nestled in a quiet area with the ocean not far off.
Living in a van gives you a unique sense of freedom—there’s no rush, no tight itinerary, just the open road and the possibility of discovery around every corner. Tasmania has so many hidden gems, and being able to park and explore whenever something catches my eye is one of the best parts of this journey.
Remarkable Cave and the nearby blowhole were highlights of this week’s travels, but the beauty of van life is that there’s always something new on the horizon. Whether it’s a quiet campsite on a road with a name that makes you smile, or an unexpected natural wonder, each day on the road offers a fresh adventure.
I can’t wait to see where the road takes me next. Thanks for joining me on this ride, and stay tuned for more stories from the Tasmanian wilderness!
Hey there, legend! I'm Ian, and guess what? I’ve ditched the cozy comforts of home for a life on the road. Why? Well, let’s just say that after a totally amicable separation from my wife in early 2023 (Hi, Babe!), I decided that van life was the way forward—because nothing screams freedom like cramming your life into a tiny metal box with wheels, right?
It all started in early 2023 with me and a trusty 1998 Volkswagen Transporter—basically a shoebox on wheels. Spoiler alert: I had zero clue what I was doing. YouTube tutorials were my best mates as I transformed that van into something resembling a home. But here’s the thing, folks—living, working, and trying to avoid smashing my head on the roof every five minutes gets old real fast. So, naturally, I upgraded! Enter: my 2017 Mercedes Benz Sprinter, an ex-ambulance with a 3.0 V6 diesel that I’ve totally mastered…kind of.
Now, I’m hitting the road, powered by my passion for adventure, a quest for a healthier lifestyle, and the occasional snack run. Van life isn’t all sunshine and rainbows, but hey, it’s the best therapy I can afford! I’m all about finding growth on the go, living simply, and dodging the consumerism hamster wheel. So, if you’re into chasing dreams, rejecting the norm, and possibly watching me struggle to open a can of beans, you’re in the right place.
