The Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Peace Accord is a tripartite agreement signed on January 27, 2020, between the Government of India, the Government of Assam, the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), and factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). Key Features of the Agreement Renaming and Restructuring: Renamed the Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) to the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), covering Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, and Udalguri districts. Increased Assembly Seats: Expanded the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) legislative seats from 40 to 60. Disarmament and Rehabilitation: Provided for the surrender and rehabilitation of thousands of NDFB ex-cadres and the withdrawal of non-heinous criminal cases. Financial and Development Package: Central and state authorities sanctioned special development packages (including a ₹1,500 crore special package) to boost infrastructure, education, and culture in the region. Language and Culture: Recognized the Bodo language as an associate official language of Assam. Security Changes: The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) was lifted from the BTR area on April 1, 2022. Current Status and Implementation Government Claims: Central and state leaders (including Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma) have stated that a large percentage (over 80%) of the accord's clauses have been fulfilled. Pending Demands: Bodo leaders and former NDFB members continue to press for 100% implementation of all clauses, including the release of remaining jailed leaders like NDFB chairman Ranjan Daimary and final boundary adjustments. #BODOLAND #BTC #Bodos
