The Challenger was one of the most successful large steam locomotives ever built, and was used for both freight and passenger service. Here are some details about the Union Pacific Challenger: Design The Challenger was a 4-6-6-4 steam locomotive with two sets of driving wheels, each with its own steam cylinders. Size The Challenger was nearly 122 ft (37 m) long and weighed 537 short tons (487 tonnes). Power The Challenger had a maximum tractive power of 97,350 lbs. Production The American Locomotive Company and Baldwin Locomotive Works built 252 Challengers between 1936 and 1943. Surviving Challengers Only two Challengers survive: UP No. 3985 and UP No. 3977. UP No. 3985 is currently undergoing a second restoration at the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America.
