2025 AfD video:
• Is Right-Wing Really Bad?
For years, Germany’s political establishment has treated the Alternative für Deutschland as a party that may contest elections, enter parliaments and win millions of votes, but must never be allowed anywhere near power. Then came Saxony-Anhalt.
The AfD won 43.8 percent of the vote, more than doubling its result from five years earlier and crushing the CDU, the party of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, which finished with just 17.2 percent. And almost immediately, the familiar words appeared everywhere: “far right,” extremism, Weimar, Hitler and the Nazis.
But nearly 44 percent of voters in a German state have now voted for this supposedly untouchable party. Calling them extremists, invoking Hitler and refusing to work with the party clearly has not stopped its rise. So what is actually happening in Germany? Why is the AfD growing so rapidly, what does it really stand for, why is it especially powerful in eastern Germany, and how long can Germany’s political establishment maintain its firewall against a party that is winning this many votes?
Let's look at the remarkable rise of the AfD, the voters and issues behind its growth, and why the result in Saxony-Anhalt could have consequences far beyond one German state.
