Something about Ohio's salt mine under Lake Erie no longer makes sense. On October 22, 2026, miners about 2,000 feet below the lake found the one thing a salt mine is built to keep out: water. Everyone got out. Nobody was hurt. And as of late October, nobody has said where the water is coming from. Morton Salt evacuated its mine at Fairport Harbor, Ohio, stopped all underground work, and four days later shut the mine down. This documentary follows the story one layer at a time: how a 400-million-year-old sea left salt under Ohio, how a gas well found it under Cleveland in 1886, and how miners have worked beneath the lake since 1960 on pillars of salt that hold up the roof. Then the timeline of October 22 to 27: what Morton Salt, federal mine inspectors and the union have actually said, what they have not, and why Painesville's hourly lake tests matter. We look at the last times water reached an American salt mine, at Retsof, New York in 1994 and Lake Peigneur, Louisiana in 1980, at the 1916 tunnel disaster under Lake Erie, and at what the shutdown means for 77 workers and six Ohio counties this winter.
