How Men Built Hell Gate Bridge to Carry the Heaviest Trains on Earth

Sixty two-hundred-ton locomotives could roll onto Hell Gate Bridge at once and the steel still wouldn't reach its limit — no bridge built before it, and few since, were engineered to a margin that extreme. This is the story of the Hell Gate Bridge, the massive steel arch railroad crossing built between Astoria, Queens, and Randalls and Wards Islands over one of the most treacherous stretches of the East River. Named for a Dutch word for a strait that had wrecked ships for three centuries, the crossing became the answer to a corporate problem: Pennsylvania Railroad president Alexander Cassatt's dream of one unbroken rail line from Washington to Boston, with no ferries and no barges in the way.　 Building it fell to engineer Gustav Lindenthal, working alongside a young Othmar Ammann, who would later design the George Washington and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridges. Together they solved a foundation problem sunk into bedrock, a construction method built on massive temporary counterweights, and a final closing gap measured in fractions of an inch — all in service of a load capacity so extreme it has never once been tested in over a century of service.
