Updated Title & Discription OCT 2026:
The Louisville Zoo train was a huge classic at The Zoo. The Zoo originally operated with three Chance Ride trains sometime between 1970s & 1980s. Sometime between 2006-2008 the trains went the opposite direction instead of the direction you see in this video. Eventually the fake drive wheels were removed and sometime in 2008, the green train derailed and injured guests that were riding. The black (was red in 2007-2008) train was sold along with the blue & red train. The green train was scrapped. The tracks were left to rot away from there on till 2013 when the tracks were replaced with new rails and The Zoo bought two brand new Severn Lamb diesel hydraulic trains. The two trains were colored blue and brown (more like a gold orange to me) respectively.
The trains operated there until 2019 when a sink hole formed by the Louisville Mega Caverns that The Zoo happens to be above. One of the tunnels of the railroad collapsed from the sink hole and forced The Zoo to close the attraction until a solution was founded. Unfortunately, it would be very costly for them to restore the tunnel & reroute the tracks resulting in permenant closure of the attraction. Some few years later, The Zoo auctioned off the Brown and Blue trains. The blue train was bought by Fort Worth Zoo to run with their existing Severn Lamb Yellow Rose train. The brown train was bought by local Buffalo Trace Distillery to have as an attraction for visitors to enjoy. However, that has yet come to fruition. There is no information as to where this train is located or stored at as of OCT 2026.
In 2025, it was announced that The Zoo will be buying one new train from Chance Rides that will be fully electric and feature a new route. This new expansion will feature new trails, habitats, and of course the cult classic train ride.
