How did the first humans discover salt? Did a prehistoric "caveman" really find it first?
In this video, we travel thousands of years into the past, to a time before chemistry, laboratories, and even the salt shaker. We explore how natural salt springs, evaporation, fire, pottery, and eventually underground mining helped prehistoric communities turn a natural resource into a valuable product.
We begin with archaeological evidence from Poiana Slatinei in Romania, one of the earliest known salt-production sites in Europe and probably the world. Then we travel to Hallstatt in Austria, where salt extraction developed over thousands of years into a highly organized industry.
But there's one question we still can't answer: Who was the first human to discover salt?
We don't know. There is no archaeological evidence that can identify the first person, the exact place, or the exact moment. What we can reconstruct is the much more fascinating process: observation, experimentation, evaporation, production, storage, mining, and eventually trade.
If you enjoy history, archaeology, prehistoric humans, ancient technology, and the hidden stories behind everyday things, subscribe and watch the next video.
If you discovered a salty spring thousands of years ago, how would you figure out that something valuable was inside the water? Tell me your answer in the comments.
