Northwest Oklahoma’s wheat country has been losing population for decades. This video examines 15 towns across Woods, Alfalfa, Dewey, Ellis, and Harper counties, comparing their 1950 populations with the 2020 census to reveal how nearly half the region’s residents disappeared over seven decades.
There was no single disaster behind the decline. Rail lines vanished, schools consolidated, farms grew larger, oil booms faded, and shopping moved farther away. One census at a time, these once-busy wheat towns became smaller, quieter, and harder to sustain.
